Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, is one of only a few Jyotirlingas whose sanctum faces south, a feature traditionally described as distinct within Shaiva ritual practice.
About the Temple
The temple stands beside the Rudra Sagar lake in the ancient city of Ujjain, one of Hinduism's Sapta Puri (seven sacred cities). Its multi-tiered structure includes underground, ground and upper sanctums, each associated with a different form of worship.
