Visit almost any major Hindu pilgrimage circuit in India and you'll find at least one destination with a specific astrological association — a temple linked to a planet, a shrine associated with a particular dosha, or a river considered purifying for specific spiritual intentions. This is not a coincidence, and it isn't a recent tourism trend either.
Sacred Geography and the Nine Grahas
Indian tradition has long mapped spiritual and astrological significance onto specific places. Mangalnath in Ujjain, traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Mars, is one clear example. The Navagraha Temple at Triveni, also in Ujjain, dedicated to all nine planetary deities, is another. Kashi Vishwanath, Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar — three of the twelve Jyotirlingas — are each connected to Shiva worship, which has a place in many traditional remedial practices regardless of the specific concern.
Even destinations without an explicit "dosha" association, like Sandipani Ashram (linked to Krishna's education) or Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple in Varanasi, carry devotional themes — learning, protection, courage — that families have long drawn on when facing specific life questions.
How to Approach This as a Traveller
Not every pilgrimage needs an astrological reason. Many devotees travel purely out of devotion, family tradition, or a wish to experience these sacred sites directly.
