Best Time to Visit India's Hill Stations

Darjeeling, Manali, Munnar, Ooty and Coorg each have their own ideal season. A region-by-region guide to when to go.

By Bharat Yatra Editorial Team

"Hill station" covers a wide range of climates in India — from the near-alpine cold of Manali and Darjeeling in winter to the year-round mild weather of Munnar and Ooty in the south. The right season depends heavily on which hills you're headed to.

Himalayan Hill Stations (Darjeeling, Sikkim, Manali, Shimla, Nainital)

March to June is the classic window — clear mountain views, blooming rhododendrons in Sikkim, and comfortable daytime temperatures. Late September to November, after the monsoon clears, is arguably even better for visibility, with crisp air and fewer crowds. December to February brings snow to many of these towns, which is a draw in itself for travellers chasing a snow holiday, but road conditions in higher areas like North Sikkim or Rohtang can be affected — worth checking with us before booking a winter departure.

Southern Hill Stations (Munnar, Ooty, Kodaikanal, Coorg, Chikmagalur)

These are far more forgiving through the year, since altitude and the surrounding Western Ghats keep temperatures moderate even in summer, which is exactly when many families visit to escape the plains' heat. The monsoon months (June–September) bring heavy rain and lush green landscapes — beautiful for some travellers, but worth knowing about in advance since waterfalls and trekking trails can be affected.

If you're not sure which hill station suits your dates, tell us your travel window when you enquire and we'll suggest the region that fits best rather than the one that simply has the most Instagram photos.
